Welcome to Room 6's Blog...

We are one of the Year 3 & 4 classes at Russley School. We aim to work together well so that we can achieve success in everything we do. To help us be successful students we use the Russley Dispositions. They help us to train our brains to think successfully when we are faced with problems where the answer is not immediately known. On our Blog you will find photos, videos, up-coming events, notices and a range of other exciting information that we would love to share with you!

HI THERE EVERYBODY!

Wow, Week 5 is upon us. This term is certainly flying by!

We've had heap of fun studying and following the Olympics over the last two week. Last Thursday we had our own 'Mini Olympics' with Mrs. Ford and Room 23. The weightlifting was impressive, the archery left the wall a bit damaged, the volleyball was controversial and the scooter racing was a lot harder than everyone thought.

A big congratulations to Roisin, Jessica and Pieta for placing cleaning up in the Girl's Scooter Final and Finn, Ben and Damian for doing the same in the Boy's Final.

We've just started our second Inquiry Cycle - Knowing Me Knowing You. But as with most things, I like to do things slightly different...

New Zealand is a multicultural society. Cultures that were once foreign are becoming more prevalent in New Zealand society. We'll be looking at a range of beliefs and values of other cultures and finding about our own cultural roots. I'm asking that the children begin to research their ancestry and make a family tree. This will obviously require assistance from home as the children find out who and where their ancestors came from. I'd like to thank you in advance for the help I know you'll give. Furthermore, we'll be looking at frogs, yes frogs, and how they are an important part of some people's beliefs and culture (it'll all make sense later this term, I promise!).

Some key dates for the remainder of the term are as follows:

Wk 5 - School Assembly,UNSW Maths & the Zone Winter Tournament

Sporting Chants...

As part of our Olympic Games Unit, I asked the children to use the 'Create and Innovate' Habit of Mind to write a a sporting chant.  Some kids opted to create a chant for the country that they are supporting for the Games, others decided to take the mickey out of their beloved teacher's cultural roots....yes, I'm talking about you Master. McElroy, Master. Harding and Master. Jefferies!!!!!

We had a great discussion of how spectators often chant loudly at sporting events and how there are often two parts to a chant - the statement and the response.

Check it out Room 27's chants:

HELLO THERE EVERYBODY ....

Well, the weather has definitely taken a turn for the worse...maybe it has something to do with Roisin returning from her big Swiss adventure???? (I'm joking Roisin. It's great to have you back)

The term is flying by, it's hard to believe it's Week 3 already! We've been busy in class, starting learning some new multiplication and division strategies, writing narratives, planning our iMovies, planning our Habits of Mind posters for the school, enjoying the Olympics, getting stuck into some Football Literacy (with Tim Bush from Mainland Football every Thursday) and are about to start thinking like frogs...

Speaking of the Olympics, Mrs. Warren has our own STA Games planned for Week 11. Also, I plan to have our own wee inter-class 'fun' Olympic Games with Room 23 and Mrs. Ford's class next week.

CLASS LEADERS
Congratulations to Cullen and Ben. Cullen has been elected the new Class Chair and Ben our Deputy Chair. They're getting the hang of running our 'vocal' weekly class meetings! Class Meetings are held every Thursday and it's a chance for the Room 27 to discuss a number of things. Have a read of our Class Minutes.

CAMP
A big thank you to those parents who put their name's forward to be camp helpers this year. Once again, we had a great response. Mr. McKenzie has notified those parents who were both successful and unsuccessful in the ballot. Speaking of camp, now could be a good time to get your kids to help 'raise' the fund for our camp at Hanmer Springs. The costs haven't been confirmed yet, but will be in the vicinity of $130. The activities at Hanmer include; walking, cycling, orienteering and others that use the local area. There's not long to go now - Week 3 of Term 4!

B.D.O
We have booked Ten Pin Bowling for the last week of the term and the cost for this, and buses, will be taken from the Term 3 Activity Costs. Any money that is left over will go towards camp costs.

HOME LEARNING
Expectations of spelling, reading and basic facts are still in place. Please make sure that your child completes this each night (Monday to Thursday), without doing the work for them. Please record their success with a tick () or a cross () in the space provided. For those who would like more work for their children, the Team Up website is what I'd recommend - teamup.co.nz. Also, the class blog has lots of links to fun educational sites.

WEEKLY QUIZ
Each week we'll be doing a quiz. You'll be able to view the quiz by clicking on the link at the top of the blog. See if you can beat the your child's score!
