Paint It All Black

The students in Room 27 at St. Albans School have shown their support for the All Blacks by creating an amazing song, 'Win Tonight',  using the music from Reece Mastin's fantastic song 'Goodnight'.  

The reason we chose this idea is because we thought it'd be really unique and a funky way to support the All Blacks. We really believe our entry will standout from the rest.  We wrote (with Mr. Ish), sung, composed, recorded & produced it by using GarageBand it all by ourselves. Not too bad for 10 year olds!

Finn was responsible for composing, recording and producing both the song and iMovie for this. He's one very talented kid and I'm sure you'll be impressed with what he has done!

The snow and the NZ Principals' Federation Public Meeting

We are now CLOSED. Mrs. Warren sends her apologies for the disruption to 
families, however, safety is important to us. 




In regards to the recent events in the media the New Zealand Principals' Federation is holding a public meeting on class sizes. Phil Harding
(Vice President, NZPF), Peter Simpson (Immediate Past President, NZPF) and Denise Torrey (Executive, NZPF) will be co-ordinatiing the meeting.
The meeting has been called to discuss the government's plans to cut staffing ratios in schools. The meeting will commence in the Cotswold School Hall at 7.00 pm on Thursday evening.  At this stage, Clayton Cosgrove will attend, and the NZPF have invited Kate Wilkinson to speak as well. Various sector group leaders will also speak.

This is a fight that we MUST win, and we will only win with the support of our parents. So if you're able to, PLEASE come along!!

Comprehension Strategy Instruction (C.S.I)

A ‘good reader’ needs to develop a wide range of skills and strategies.   Learning to decode marks on a page and recognise an extensive list of words is the first step.  Many children can do this fluently and yet do not demonstrate much understanding of the material they have just read.  They are under the misconception that a good reader is a fast reader.  The reality is that fast reading can be achieved without any processing of text or construction of meaning taking place.

A good reader is a reader who: 

• Understands that reading is about constructing meaning not just 'eating' text 

• Understands that reading is a very active process involving a mental dialogue with the author and their own prior knowledge and personal experience 

• Varies the speed of reading depending on the monitoring of that process
(H. Ayrey, 2007)

A good reader is like a detective.  They take time to look for clues, make sure that they get the facts right, and are always thinking about the information.  In Room 27 we are learning how to (WALHT) become reading detectives using C.S.I.

You will see the 'Spades' (Anna, Pieta, Isabella, Elliot and Jesse) in action on the link below. They will be using 'I Think That Means...' to construct meaning, and one (or two) of the 'Deep 5' to be active readers by using their own prior knowledge and personal experience.
